Grade 6 Junior Art Competition

art9

The Rotary Club of Hawthorn Art Competition for Grade 6 students was successfully concluded on 3 June, 2009, with another great exhibition of works at the Chandelier Room, Hawthorn Hall, and subsequent judging and awards for the best entries.

This year's subject theme was 'Make Dreams Real', recognizing the 2008-09 Rotary International theme.

The winning works and other award winning entries for various schools are shown below. Each winning student received a special certificate and. for schools with 6 or more entries, the school winner also received a $50 book voucher from Dymocks of Camberwell. This year's overall winner, Hosanna Mathew, from Glenferrie Primary School, received a $100 book voucher from Dymocks of Camberwell.

Again this year the judges, and visitors to the exhibition, were treated to a marvellous display of art and were delighted with the very high standard of works submitted. Once again the displays were substantial enough to justify continuing with this event and we could have accommodated a greater number of entries and more participating schools.

Our judges this year were again Lynne Boyd and Robyn Burgess. Both are practising artists with a Master of Arts degree from Monash University. Robyn is also a lecturer in art at Latrobe University. We thank both Lynne and Robyn for their continuing support and encouragement of this annual event.

As always, it was a difficult task for the judges to make choices when the most important element is the participation by students. The final decision was so close that, in addition to the overall winner award going to Glenferrie Primary School, two other students from the same school were presented with Exceptional Merit Awards to recognize their outstanding contributions.

Brendan Healy, St Michael's Ashburton, 'The Scream' Judges' comments: A very interesting image of fear in the night. Intriguing. St Michael's students are studying the art of Edvard Munch, in particular, 'The Scream', and explored the flip side of the dream - the nightmare.

The Rotary Club of Hawthorn acknowledges and thanks Dymocks of Camberwell for their continued support of this event and for providing book vouchers for winning students.
