Heroes of Hawthorn at the Relay for Life

Since its inception in 2006, our club has been involved in this event, which is now well established as one of our most successful community service projects. This event is about remembering those who have suffered cancer, those who need support, and looking to the future. To do this, people walked as one around and around an oval over 18 hours creating a wonderful esprit de corps.

Some 25 Rotarians from the club lent their support to the cancer council event which raised in excess of $86,000 for cancer research. I am indebted to all those who either participated, sold raffle tickets, or made donations to this worthy cause. The evening itself was memorable, enhanced by the balmy weather which lent itself to a festival atmosphere. (This was somewhat dampened later in the evening when the automatic sprinklers on the oval caused mayhem and fun!)

My special thanks go to those members who suffer from insomnia and obviously took some pleasure at walking around a 300 m track in the wee small hours.
